Vision

The Open Science Learning GATE brings together active research communities committed to advancing Open Science (education) in the European Research Area and beyond.

The GATE is poised to continuously refine Open Science practices and core guiding thoughts for various target groups, thereby building knowledge for Open Science (education) that aligns with the evolving landscape of innovative, efficient, trustworthy, and reliable research.

While the GATE is dedicated to upholding Research Integrity and Ethics as essential pillars of responsible research conduct and Open Science, its goal is to provide a dynamic knowledge hub grounded in community-validated, target-group-oriented data collection on guiding thoughts embedded in educational materials.

In a nutshell, the GATE promotes high-quality educational materials and their ongoing optimisation, fosters engagement, and builds community amongst all Open Science actors.

Mission

The GATE invites Open Science trainers and research communities to engage with the GATE Service and thus support the vibrant knowledge exchange among active trainers and communities to optimise Open Science capacities.

DATA COLLECTION: By participating, you contribute target group-specific expertise on Open Science guiding thoughts, practices and educational goals embedded in your educational materials.

EVALUATION: GATE’s Advisory Committee experts are evaluating this data.

FEEDBACK OF THE RESULTS TO THE PARTICIPANTS: Via feedback loops (with the GATE Service, GATE reports, trainings, and updates), the GATE dynamically mirrors the findings to the research communities and trainers. Thus, the GATE keeps trainers continuously informed on key guiding thoughts and practices that the research community considers essential for advancing open science.

This approach supports a collaborative environment for knowledge exchange, ongoing optimisation or development of up-to-date Open Science capacities, engagement and community-building amongst all Open Science actors and sustainable access to high-quality educational materials.

Benefits in a Nutshell

ONGOING REFINEMENT OF OPEN SCIENCE GUIDING THOUGHTS: The GATE ensures the ongoing knowledge exchange in Open Science education and practice by collecting, analysing, structuring and disseminating knowledge on Open Science guiding thoughts and practices, effectively capturing changes over time.

ADAPTIVE CAPACITY-BUILDING AND SUPPORT: The GATE stimulates ongoing self-reflection, updating and optimising Open Science educational materials by current guiding thoughts and practices. It promotes up-to-date materials and authorship recognition through annual GATE Reports (with the first report expected in June 2026) and the GATE’s website, enhancing the visibility of the educational materials. Learners thus benefit from cutting-edge training, while the broader Open Science community gains from ongoing updates on the evolving guiding thoughts and latest developments in Open Science practices, needs and chances.

PROMOTION AND SUSTAINABLE (RE-)USE: The GATE promotes FAIR educational material in openly accessible and trusted repositories by intersecting resources that participated in the GATE Service. Supplemented by the updating process and GATE’s continuous promotion activities, educational materials remain visible, enabling sustainable usage even after projects’ activities conclude.

INCREASING EXPERTISE IN OPEN SCIENCE: GATE's expanding data collection on Open Science practices and education provides valuable findings and rich metadata on Open Science practices and education.

COMMUNITY BUILDING AND ENGAGEMENT: The GATE stimulates engagement and supports establishing a diverse community of trainers, their supporters, institutions, and researchers conducting meta-research (Research Corner) based on GATE’s findings. It connects Open Science actors and communities by promoting (re-)use of intersected capacities.
